There are few things more painful than looking for a job.
And if you’ve got a job search problem, you’ll be spending hours on end trying to find a match that works for you.
A new study from University of Maryland, College Park, found that more than a third of Americans with a job are in search of it, and the reason is simple: You can’t use the internet to find jobs.
“If you have a job and you want to do it, it’s going to be hard,” says Jennifer Smith, an associate professor of marketing at the University of Miami.
“People are just not going to find it.”
The problem, says Smith, is that people are not actually looking for jobs.
Instead, they’re trying to fill jobs.
In fact, nearly half of Americans in search are looking for something other than work.
And that’s a problem, she says.
“It’s the opposite of what we want to see.”
The study was based on interviews with 1,000 people who were either employed or unemployed and had worked in various industries.
In addition, people who identified themselves as part of a marketing profession were surveyed, as well as people who weren’t.
It turns out, the majority of people in search, 53%, were seeking work.
Smith said the study highlights how online job searching can be very frustrating.
“Most people have jobs that they’re working toward,” she says, “and then they’re looking for work, and they’re frustrated by the search process.”
The main reason people are looking in search is that they need to find work, Smith says.
When people are searching online, they have to go to jobs and sites that they haven’t looked at before.
That makes it difficult to know what to look for and what to do.
The study also found that people in the marketing profession are also looking for the job, but they are less likely to do so.
“They’re just looking for more information,” Smith says, adding that this is the same situation people in other professions are experiencing.
While a search on LinkedIn and other sites can lead to a job offer, it doesn’t always translate into employment.
In other words, people aren’t always looking for opportunities in the same industries.
“When people search for work online, it is very frustrating, especially if you’re looking to start a career,” Smith said.
“In other words it’s not going anywhere.”
The researchers also looked at the online work of more than 3,000 career fairs and job fairs in the U.S. That included people who are in the field, but who aren’t actively looking for an actual job.
They found that only 22% of the people who attended career fair and job-hunting events said they would be interested in hiring.
The same is true for the people at the event who were looking for potential work, but weren’t looking to do anything.
And those who were seeking a job were more likely to go for a temporary job than to move into a full-time position.
Smith says these kinds of outcomes are troubling because people who do not have a specific career in mind are less inclined to look at a job in the first place.
“The question is whether we’re going to go out and find those people who actually are actively looking,” Smith adds.
“That may be a job market where we have a shortage of people who want to work, because that’s the reality.”
Smith is concerned that this trend of people looking for employment online will lead to more job search scams.
“We see it a lot,” she said.
She believes that job search bots are using this problem to make money by taking people who might not be looking for job offers and putting them in online ads that are then sold to potential employers.
“What we see in our study is that the people on these sites are the people that they advertise to,” she notes.
“These are people who they’re hoping to get hired.
We think this could be the reason that the job search industry is in trouble.”
In other parts of the country, people are finding ways to get around the problem.
In Florida, for instance, people can now search for a vacant job through the website jobsearch.com and hire a contractor.
In Pennsylvania, people search Craigslist for a home, and people can pay a contractor to do a job for them.
Other states are starting to take steps to prevent job search sites from gaining too much control over their jobs, and Smith says there is still work to be done.
“At this point we’re still trying to figure out what to tell people who have job search problems,” she warns.
“There’s no silver bullet.”
